Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots International Volunteer Program – Tanzania

Location: Dar es Salaam & Moshi, Tanzania

Status: Now accepting applications for 2012

2012 Start Dates: January 2 & July 2 (6 month commitment)

Program Description:

International volunteers have been vital to Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots (JGR&S) throughout the program’s history, and JGR&S is constantly working to make the volunteer experience as beneficial as possible for both the program and for the international volunteers.  The cultural exchange that occurs when volunteers from around the world interact with Tanzania JGR&S members and staff is one of the most important aspects of the program, and is one way that JGR&S truly accomplishes its goal of promoting cultural understanding and peace.

International volunteers play an important role in our Tanzanian programs.  Their expertise, dedication, and enthusiasm are of great value both to the program and to the community the program works in.  Volunteers with specialized skills (such as grant writing, curriculum development, community development, etc.) may be given the opportunity to apply those skills in creative ways for the program.

Activities/Duties:

* Please note that the following are activities that former volunteers have participated in.  This is not meant to be a comprehensive list of activities nor is it meant to be an exact list of activities that future volunteers will participate in.

Support local JGR&S clubs through attending club meetings, assisting with project creation and implementation, and making educational presentations. Successful projects have included: cleaning beaches and schoolyards, bird watching, tree planting, creating school gardens, visiting orphanages and hospitals, field trips to natural areas, and campaigns to raise awareness of local environmental and social issues such as HIV/AIDS and bushmeat.

Represent JGR&S in the local community through conducting presentations, teaching workshops, exhibiting at a community event, visiting new schools who are interested in joining the program, or participating in partner organization’s events.

Aid in the planning, preparation and implementation of annual Roots & Shoots events such as International Peace Day, African Child Day, and JGR&S week.

Assist with general office administrative tasks.

Perform other duties/participate in other activities as assigned.

Experience/Qualifications:

Experience in one or more of the following areas: JGR&S, environmental education, community development, public health, teaching, sciences, conservation, event planning, grant writing, computers/technology, and administrative support.

The ideal volunteer will be mature, flexible, patient, self-motivated, adapt to new environments easily, willing to work hard, culturally sensitive, have a sense of humor, and willing to do whatever tasks need to be done.

Experience working in Africa or a developing country a plus.
