Bagida’waad Alliance: Meet the leaders and show your support

Indigenous Nation/Groups involved: Bagida’waad Alliance is a not-for-profit organization led and managed by Anishinaabe community members of the Chippewas of Nawash and Saugeen First Nations.

Location: Bagida’waad Alliance is based in Neyaashiinigmiing, Ontario. The group conducts research and stewardship of the lands of the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula and the waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Description: Meet Natasha and Andrew Akiwenzie, leaders of the Bagida’waad Alliance!

From the Lac Seul First Nation and the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation, respectively, they’re deeply connected to the land and water, embodying a tradition of stewardship passed down through generations. Witnessing the effects of climate change firsthand, they recognized the urgent need for action. That’s why in 2018 they decided to close their commercial fishing business and embark on a new journey – founding Bagida’waad Alliance! Rooted in Indigenous knowledge and guided by a deep respect for the land, their mission is clear: to safeguard Lake Huron and Georgian Bay for future generations.

Their work protects vital ecosystems while honouring Anishinaabe traditions and amplifying Indigenous voices. Their goals include researching and spreading awareness about the impacts of climate change, encouraging intergenerational knowledge transfer, and promoting active stewardship of the lands and waters. Bagida’waad Alliance is making bold action to advance biodiversity conservation and environmental justice in their communities and beyond.

Key Biodiversity: Bagida’waad Alliance is confronting the challenges of climate change head-on. From combating invasive zebra mussels to grappling with diminishing winter ice cover, they are witnessing far-reaching consequences on the diverse ecosystems of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Responding to these challenges, Bagida’waad Alliance embraces Indigenous conservation practices, draws upon Traditional Knowledge, and empowers their community to take action. With a focus on preserving critical habitats for species like the lake whitefish and lake trout, they’re working hard to support species at risk despite external pressures.
