A Trip Around the World with Roots & Shoots

It started as a small initiative in 1991 with 12 high school students in Tanzania. Today Roots & Shoots is a vibrant global youth movement with thousands of members in nearly 100 countries. To learn more about kinds of creative and inspiring projects that young people are doing, we invite you to take a journey around the globe with the launch of the Roots & Shoots Google Earth Voyager Layer!
From Tanzania to the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Argentina, Taiwan, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, Google Earth shows you the amazing youth-led efforts to help animals, people and the environment.
Thousands of young voices are delivering messages of compassion, peace, respect, security, and dignity by taking action through initiatives that will build a better future for all living creatures. From planting gardens for migratory butterflies, to the construction of an outdoor classroom in collaboration with Indigenous Elders, every project makes an impact.
Canada’s Roots & Shoots school, Terrace Ridge School, is highlighted, giving them an opportunity to show the world their stunning outdoor classroom. JGI Canada has offered Terrace Ridge another grant through our A.P.E. Fund for three more projects this year to make their school even more sustainable.
Perhaps our Google trip will inspire you to make a change in your community! As Dr. Jane says: “Every individual matters, has a role to play, and makes a difference.”
