Learn more about the Aullaviat/Anguniarvik Traditional Conservation Area

The Inuvialuit-led Aullaviat/Anguniarvik Traditional Conservation Area (TCA) protects nearly 8,500 km² of the Eastern Yukon North Slope, a critical area for wildlife and Inuvialuit traditional use.

This significant area connects a network of terrestrial and marine protected areas across northern Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Alaska, supporting species migration – including the Porcupine Caribou Herd.

The Aullaviat/Anguniarvik TCA was established in June 2024, 40 years in the making since the 1984 Inuvialuit Final Agreement identified the Yukon North Slope as an area for conservation.

The signatories to the Agreement include the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Inuvialuit Game Council, Aklavik Community Corporation, Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee, Aklavik Elders Committee, Government of Canada, and Government of Yukon.

The goals of the conservation area are to support Inuvialuit traditional use, cultural revitalization, and environmental stewardship, with the Inuvialuit leading its management. The area protects vital wildlife, including caribou, muskox, grizzly bears, polar bears, migratory birds, and fish.

The Aullaviat/Anguniarvik Working Group oversees the implementation of the Agreement and includes two appointed members each from the Aklavik Community Corporation, Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee, and Aklavik Elders Committee, plus one Member at Large.

The Working Group and staff run culture camps in the conservation area to support cultural revitalization and community building. They are also developing a Land Guardians Program, building a team of Inuvialuit stewards to monitor, protect, and care for the land and waters – serving as the eyes, ears, and heart of Aullaviat/Anguniarvik.

Named by the community, in Inuvialuktun, Aullaviat/Anguniarvik means “where wildlife and people travel, a place to hunt.”
