Message from Prime Minister Mark Carney on Dr. Jane Goodall’s passing

It is a profound honour to send my wishes to celebrate the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE.

Dr. Goodall’s influence truly reached every corner of the globe, including significantly here in Canada. She was not only a pioneering scientist but a moral and spiritual leader for our age. She reminded us that humanity’s true greatness lies in our compassion, our curiosity, and our care for our living planet. Her contributions to science, to Canada, and to humanity were immeasurable. Her groundbreaking research in Gombe transformed our understanding of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.

In Canada, she helped advance groundbreaking legislation for the protection of captive wild animals, inspired Canada’s global climate leadership and helped cultivate a uniquely Canadian approach to conservation—one grounded in science, our youth, and respect for Indigenous knowledge. Her tireless advocacy inspired generations to see that science and empathy are not opposing forces, but essential partners in the stewardship of our home planet.

As we remember Dr. Goodall today, we honour not only her extraordinary achievements, but her enduring call to conscience—to act with courage, to protect the natural world, and to nurture the best of our shared humanity.

May her spirit continue to guide and inspire all who seek to build a more just, sustainable, and compassionate world.
