One birthday, one wish, and one powerful reminder that your actions matter

When most people plan a milestone birthday, they think about celebrations. But not Libby Wildman. When she started planning her 60th birthday, her mind went to Jane. To chimpanzees, to communities, to changemakers.

As one of our proud Jane’s Peak Society members, Libby has long been an exceptional part of our community. And when her birthday started getting closer, she made a different request of her friends and family: Skip the gift, and make a difference by donating to the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada instead.

“I’m filled with gratitude for a life rich in love and learning,” Libby wrote ahead of her birthday. “Instead of gifts, I’m giving back by supporting the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada — because hope, responsibility, and small actions truly make a difference.”

Her loved ones came out for her in an extremely powerful way. 30 people raised more than $8,400 for wildlife conservation in Libby’s honour, proving that so much more is possible when we work together.

When she was reflecting on why she felt the fundraiser was important, and why amplifying Jane’s hopeful message felt more urgent than ever, Libby said this: “Hope is what is really going to lead the way.” In these times, when environmental challenges can feel overwhelming, Libby saw amplifying Jane’s message as meaningful — and necessary.

“I am so, so thankful for everyone who has supported my birthday wish to support Jane’s message of hope,” she added.

And we are so thankful to you, Libby. Your generous support, and the kindness of your community, is so appreciated. Your dedication to the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is an incredible example of what advancing Jane’s legacy — and supporting local communities and young changemakers — can look like as we carry forth her mission together.
