Our hearts broke when we lost Jane. Over the past year, we’ve all missed her deeply — and we know so many of you have, too.

Today, we are remembering her determination. Her discoveries. Her empathy. Her conviction. Her tenacity. We remember how she made us laugh. We remember how she made us smile. And we remember how she pushed us forward.

Even now, we see her as our guiding force — and more and more, as time goes on, we seem to look at each other and ask: “What would Jane do?”

We all know what Jane would do. She’d keep going. She’d want us to do more, to be bold, and to act with courage. That’s why, today, we are more resolved than ever to keep doing the work that she championed throughout her life.

“When Jane visited Canada, she would make a point of acknowledging the work of the team, always encouraging us,” Bella Lam, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada’s Chief Executive Officer, wrote. “Reflecting on this past year, I’d like to think Jane would’ve been proud of the work we’ve done to continue spreading her message of hope — a message we share with all Canadians today.”

Across the country and around the world, Jane’s influence is woven into all of the work we do.

It’s in the Roots & Shoots groups planting trees, building gardens, and planning local clean-ups.

It’s in the classrooms where kids learn that they, too, can be environmentalists and changemakers.

It’s in the communities we work with, because Jane showed us that conservation works best when the people with whom we share these lands are included.

And, of course, it’s in the sanctuaries where rescued chimpanzees get the care they need and the second chances they deserve.

That’s the legacy Jane leaves behind — and that’s the work that we’ll continue to do as we take action, inspired by our remarkable founder.

Thank you for being part of this work. You meant the world to Jane, and we’re grateful that you have chosen to keep standing with us as we advance her mission and build a world where animals, people, and the environment can all thrive.

As we pause to remember Jane today, we hope you can also take some time to pay tribute to this incredible figure who touched — and inspired — so many. Here are some ways you can honour Jane:

  • Plant trees or native plants in your yard
  • Take part in local beach or park clean-ups
  • Choose plant-based meals for the day
  • Connect with, and advocate for, animals
  • Get out into nature and enjoy the fresh air
  • Sign up for the Jane Goodall Hike for Hope
