July 6, 2026 “We are a forest:” A founding member of Roots & Shoots reflects on the program’s success Photo: Jane Goodall Institute Roots & Shoots was created when some students approached Dr. Jane – on her front porch in Tanzania – and told her that they worry about the environment but don’t know where to start with taking action. She knew they were passionate, determined, and able to lead the way – but they needed some support, structure, and resources to get started. That’s what Roots & Shoots helps with. Collin Mothupi was one of the original members of Roots & Shoots, and was there for the photo on Dr. Jane’s front porch – which was taken 35 years ago. Through the program, he created projects that ultimately led him down the path to his current job – the chairman of the board of Pathfinder International. “Roots & Shoots wasn’t just a program,” he said. “It became a way of life. We have identified themes that define us as sustainable, civic, engaged individuals, environmental stewards, and a profound global awareness. We are not just one 35-year-old tree anymore.
