Canada Programs A.P.E. Fund Funding for high-needs Roots & Shoots projects What is A.P.E. Fund? A.P.E. Fund stands for animals, people, and the environment. It’s a granting program that helps fund high-needs Roots & Shoots projects. Roots & Shoots members can apply for up to $1,000 to support the implementation of their projects in their communities. A.P.E. Fund is made possible by our generous partners and supporters. Applications are closed for this year and will reopen November 2023. You are eligible to apply if: You’re a member of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Canada. Learn more here! Your project must take place in Canada. If you are from a different country please contact your local Roots & Shoots group. Your project and final report will be completed by June 15th 2023. Your project addresses the convergence of 3 crises: Biodiversity loss (Animals), Environmental Inequity (People) and Climate Change (Environment). Resources Our Resource section includes things like our Climate Change Curriculum Guide and our Biodiversity Guide. These can be helpful tools for any project! Discover Resources Current Projects Biodiversity Loss (Animals), Climate Change (Environment), Environmental Inequity (People) Save the Polar Bears & Create a Polar Bear Park Manitoba has lost a third of its polar bear population. If we act now, we can help mother bears protect their cubs. Northern communities are working to establish Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas in the region. We want partner with CPAWS to create a polar bear park. Biodiversity Loss (Animals), Climate Change (Environment) Save the Pollinators! Our students have expressed interest in protecting pollinator species in our community. We want to plant a native plant species, build protective habitats for pollinators and ensure the longevity of these species in our community. We will be raising butterflies and releasing them. Biodiversity Loss (Animals), Climate Change (Environment), Environmental Inequity (People) Saving Our Wetlands Students will learn about the various biomes in Manitoba with a focus on wetlands. They will learn about the importance of wetlands and how the loss of wetlands affects animals and humans. Students will spread awareness about how our actions can impact the environment. Biodiversity Loss (Animals), Climate Change (Environment), Environmental Inequity (People) School Garden and Pollination Project Build and plant a school/community garden with the focus on vegetables as well as pollination. This project will have endless benefits for students that will extend beyond the classroom and long into their adult life. Biodiversity Loss (Animals) School Garden and Wildlife/Bird Observation Station I would love to increase the size of our tiny school garden so that we can begin to provide some fresh food options for our school breakfast and lunch program in the spring (fresh greens) and fall (squash, tomatoes, potatoes). Would also plant pollinator plants and grow bird seed. Biodiversity Loss (Animals), Climate Change (Environment), Environmental Inequity (People) Seed Starting in the Spring Sun The Nimkii Youth Collective plan to build a covered space to house newly started plants for our community garden. The seed starting case would protect against frost and cold night temps, extend our very short growing season and allow for a more successful rate of germination and seedling survival. Biodiversity Loss (Animals), Climate Change (Environment), Environmental Inequity (People) Seven Grandfather Teachings: Empowering youth to create a Pollinator Garden, restore a Pond and mentor peers Honouring our school goal, Seven Grandfather Teachings, elementary students will plant Pollinator (bees, butterflies, hummingbirds) preferred wildflowers, annuals, and wild trees in the schoolyard and near the city trail. We will clean and restore a pond area and reduce plastic waste in our school. Biodiversity Loss (Animals), Environmental Inequity (People) Sharing the harvest Presently we have a large First Nations tradition plant demonstration plot. We are working with our First Nations partners to develop a seed and plant material distribution plan. Our students have learned to harvest, dry, and collect the seeds so they may be shared with all the schools in the board Biodiversity Loss (Animals), Climate Change (Environment), Environmental Inequity (People) Soil Regeneration Project The goals of the project are to organize and implement activities that promote soil regeneration, that prioritize composting of waste from other school programs, that establishes a native prairie ecosystem, and that provides a culturally significant space on school property. « 1 … 6 7 8 9 10 »
