A.P.E. Fund Seed Starting in the Spring Sun Serpent River First Nation, Robinson Huron Treaty Territory, Ontario The Nimkii Youth Collective plan to build a covered space to house newly started plants for our community garden. The seed starting case would protect against frost and cold night temps, extend our very short growing season and allow for a more successful rate of germination and seedling survival. This would also enable the students to learn how to grow their own food and take care of plants and plant life. During this process, we would also visit our local greenhouse. We currently have over 40 gardens across the Niagara Region. This year we hope to increase our intergenerational native gardens by setting up our team of youth with interested seniors and plant pollinator gardens for them. View project Environmental Inequity (People) Microgreens – Mega Nutrition! We identified that a big need in our community is food insecurity. We realized that many students at our school are currently accessing food banks. After researching, we learned microgreens are nutrient dense, easy to grow and could be a great source of fresh vegetables. We plan to grow our own! View project
