Forests and oceans are “the two great lungs of planet Earth,” as Dr. Jane has said.

They work hard, absorbing and sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere, and they give out more than half of our planet’s oxygen. But human activity – our use of chemicals, for example, and our misuse of natural resources – has had harmful impacts on forests and has caused significant biodiversity loss.

To halt this loss of important biodiversity, and to ensure forests around the world can continue to serve as “lungs” for our only home, sustainable forestry is needed. In the coastal regions of Kenya and Tanzania, thousands of community members are stepping up to implement sustainable solutions – and the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is supporting this work. But we can’t do that without you.

What We're Doing

Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems

Through this project, communities are leading nature-based solutions, accessing the tools and training needed to achieve their conservation goals. Community members, especially women, are leading efforts in gender-responsive forest management through training and shared knowledge. We’re also supporting young leaders who are establishing Roots & Shoots clubs and receiving conservation training. And so much more.

Over the past year, community members who are participating have made incredible progress.

For example, new village tree nurseries have been established in the Tanga region. These nurseries are going to produce 60,000 seedlings – which aligns nicely with the local push to plant more trees, supports environmental conservation efforts, and contributes to mitigation and adaptation initiatives.

On top of that work, Roots & Shoots clubs have expanded into more than 40 schools since the project was launched last year. Dozens of young leaders have also been identified for training in leadership, climate advocacy, and gender equality.

How You Can Help

This progress is inspiring, and it’s only possible because of your generosity. Please donate today to ensure this kind of work – and this progress – can continue.

What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.
