July 6, 2026“We are a forest:” A founding member of Roots & Shoots reflects on the program’s success Photo: Jane Goodall InstituteRoots & Shoots was created when some students approached Dr. Jane – on her front porch in Tanzania – and told her that they worry about the environment but don’t know where to start with taking action. She knew they were passionate, determined, and able to lead the way – but they needed some support, structure, and resources to get started. That’s what Roots & Shoots helps with.Collin Mothupi was one of the original members of Roots & Shoots, and was there for the photo on Dr. Jane’s front porch – which was taken 35 years ago.Through the program, he created projects that ultimately led him down the path to his current job – the chairman of the board of Pathfinder International.“Roots & Shoots wasn’t just a program,” he said. “It became a way of life. We have identified themes that define us as sustainable, civic, engaged individuals, environmental stewards, and a profound global awareness. We are not just one 35-year-old tree anymore. We are a forest.”This year, join us as we celebrate the incredible work that Roots & Shoots groups have launched over the past three-plus decades. We’re looking forward to many, many more years of youth leadership and impactful projects. To learn more about Roots & Shoots, and to see how you can join, go to RootsAndShoots.ca.Explore Related Content Good News Stories, Hike for Hope, News and UpdatesThank you for making history with the first-ever Jane Goodall Hike for Hope!July 6, 2026 Read more From The FieldHow Collaborative Conservation Drives ChangeJuly 6, 2026 Read more Dr. Jane“The Old Wisdom:” Read one of Dr. Jane’s famous poemsJuly 6, 2026 Read more
