LIVGREEN (Learning through Indigenous Visions of Greening Roots, Education, and ENvironment) provides environmental knowledge, service-learning, and leadership opportunities for young Canadians – particularly Indigenous, BPOC, 2SLGBTQ+ youth, and those from other underserved communities. This project intends to increase the capacity of young people to lead community change and sustainable solutions targeting climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and environmental inequity. LIVGREEN’s objectives include: Providing youth with a holistic environmental education approach linked to the major environmental crises; Engaging youth in community-based actions targeting the major environmental crises; Engaging educators in professional development that integrates environmental education into their practices, and; Prioritizing project engagement amongst underserved youth across Canada. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada, through Environment and Climate Change Canada. Project Benefits By providing young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to address climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and environmental inequity, these individuals will continue to lead change in their communities and beyond. By placing an emphasis on cross-cultural exchanges among youth, this project will create a network of environmentally-conscious individuals who can – and who want to – collaborate and share knowledge beyond the project’s timeline. By integrating environmental education into teacher training, educators will be empowered to to incorporate sustainability principles into their teaching – ensuring future generations of students will benefit from an education that emphasizes environmental awareness and action. Project Goals Professional Development 1000 educators directly engaged in professional development training. Greener Learning Spaces 800 youth involved in enhancing or restoring local green spaces relevant to their environmental learning. Further Learning Opportunities 100 youth engaged in cross-cultural exchanges to promote knowledge sharing. These activities will foster a culture of environmental stewardship that exists far beyond the project period. Empowered youth and educators, strengthened community knowledge, and valuable research related to environmental literacy will continue to contribute to a sustainable, environmentally-conscious Canadian society for years to come. Professional Development The LIVGREEN Professional Development program supports educators in bringing environmental action into the classroom in practical, accessible, and community-connected ways. The professional development focuses on helping educators build confidence, structure, and momentum for youth-led environmental action within schools and local contexts. LIVGREEN is being released as a pilot, launching on February 6th, 2026 and running until September 30th, 2026. Feedback gathered throughout the pilot will directly inform the final version of the course before it is made widely available. This pilot phase is intentionally focused on testing the structure and design of the professional development – including module length, sequencing, pacing, and overall usability. LIVGREEN is grounded in strong, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous partners. We will continue to deepen our integration of localized Indigenous knowledge, Two-Eyed Seeing, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge over time and ensure that partners and individuals who will be contributing to the professional development are appropriately integrated and honoured. The pilot includes a mix of online learning and optional in-person sessions – running between September 2025 and May 2026. Participants will be invited to share feedback on modules, and the course as a whole, through light data collection and optional discussions.
