October 11, 2026International Day of the Girl — and our commitment to removing barriers and addressing obstacles Photo: Stephano LiheduleYoung people gave Jane hope. She knew that they were not just the leaders of the future, but that they were leading the way forward already and making the world better today. We feel the same way.But we also know that young people — young girls, especially — face real challenges and must overcome real obstacles. They want to get involved but, far too often, are not able to. With support, with resources, and with guidance, these young leaders can do so much good.We know this because Jane was once that girl. With support from her mother, she was able to do what she had dreamed of — even when other girls, at that time, were not doing what she dreamed of doing. By now, you know the rest of that tale. Jane went on to pursue her dreams, and she changed science forever and inspired millions. To make sure more young girls have that same shot, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is committed to working with partners who are addressing obstacles, removing barriers, and amplifying young leaders and the great ideas they have. From our Roots & Shoots program here at home, to our community-led conservation initiatives across Africa, we’re focused on ensuring young girls can participate, contribute, and do what they want to do to make the future better for animals, people, and the environment. That is true on this International Day of the Girl and every other day of the year.
